In a colorful and peaceful atmosphere never seen anywhere at any time of a political gathering, Nigeria’s foremost opposition political party, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) had its first ever integration national convention where it fused into the new mega merger party, All Progressive Congress, APC.
The convention which held in Lagos on Thursday April 18 had in attendance the political big weights of the four merger parties of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC),All Nigeria’s People Party(ANPP),All Progressive Grand Alliance(APGA) and the Action Congress of Nigeria
(ACN). These are the indefatigable former presidential aspirant of the CPC,Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, the party’s National Chairman, Prince Tony Momoh; the ACN National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; his counterpart, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu from the All Nigeria’s Peoples Party and former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The APC leaders at the Lagos convention made an avowed declaration to replace the“visionless ruling PDP in 2015”. The ACN was finally absorbed into the new APC by a motion moved by its National Organizing Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Kari which was seconded by Mrs. Tonia Adon from Ebonyi State.
It will be recalled that just after the announcement of the emergence of APC, an outcome of the meeting of the
Political leaders of four opposition political parties, CPC, ANPP, APGA and ACN in Ekiti State, in the trail of criticisms on its chances of survival, the articulate Lagos State parliamentarian Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu had stated in a press interview that the APC had come to stay.
With the holding of the Lagos national convention on Thursday, April 18, 2013 that saw ACN fused into APC, the rest, it can be said is now history. With APC being able to withstand the behind the door brinkmanship by agents of the ruling party to let it die a still birth, there is no gain-saying the fact that it is set to wrest power from the ruling PDP.
The success of the merger and the subsequent Lagos convention is proof beyond doubt that the APC and those behind it is set to make a ghuge difference in Nigerian politics. This is more so when formidable political leaders like the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mohammadu Buhari, Rochas Okorocha among others are the drivers of APC. We have indeed entered the era of politics unusual in Nigeria. The convention held at the Onikan stadium had over 4,761 delegates in attendance.
