As the “Ounje Eko” market enters its second week simultaneously across all 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) in the State, Lagosians who flocked to purchase the affordable food items have applauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s efforts in reducing the price of essential foods.
In interviews with some of the buyers, they expressed their admiration for the government’s launch of the “Ounje Eko” market and its accessibility to the masses.
Adding to the excitement, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, representing Eti-Osa 02, provided an additional one thousand naira free ticket to the already discounted market. The gesture by Yishawu further delighted the people.
One of the buyers, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed her appreciation for the government’s measures to make the market experience more convenient.
She stated, “There is improvement this week compared to last week. The queues for each item are a bit long, and last week, we struggled to obtain vouchers for all the items, but today we have to queue to pay for each item.”
She further added, “The arrangement has improved. Some of the POS machines were not working, and there were issues with debiting money due to network problems. We hope this continues and that the market is brought back to Saturdays, allowing more people to benefit.”
Olabisi Louis, the market leader and supervisor, revealed that the market was progressing despite some minor issues.
She said, “We have encountered a few setbacks, but overall, people are purchasing the items, and the prices are reasonable. This is the government’s intention – to assist people during these challenging times by offering food at more affordable prices. We have enough supplies to serve the people.”
Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, who monitored the market, commended the Lagos State Government (LASG) for organizing the market and providing discounted food items to residents.
During an interview at the old Nursing school Ground in Ikoyi, where the market was held, Yishawu expressed his gratitude for the State government’s interventions to reduce transportation costs, healthcare expenses, and now, making affordable food accessible to the community.
Yishawu described the program as a commendable initiative, witnessing a large turnout of people and an abundance of high-quality foodstuffs.
In support of the initiative, Yishawu announced that he would provide his constituents with an additional free ticket worth N1,000, in addition to the 25 percent discount offered by the State government. He emphasized that his gesture aimed to ensure food accessibility for all residents attending the market.
Yishawu assured his constituents that his team would be present every week to distribute the additional N1,000 tickets to them.
“We have enough vouchers to go around. We arrived early to monitor the process and ensure its success. People are happy at the end of the day,” Yishawu proclaimed.
The market is slated to continue for six weeks, providing an opportunity for Lagosians to purchase food items at lower prices.
