The lawmaker representing Eti-Osa Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Gbolahan Yishawu, recorded a massive turnout of supporters and party members during the All Progressives Congress (APC) State Assembly primaries held across the constituency.
The primary election, which took place in areas including Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Obalende, witnessed large crowds of residents and party faithful who gathered to participate in the exercise and show support for the incumbent lawmaker.
Supporters at the venue described the turnout as unprecedented, with many arriving as early as 6 a.m. to participate in the process despite delays before voting commenced.
Other aspirants contesting for the APC ticket, including Bunmi Tejuosho and Segun Idowu, were reportedly absent at the various venues where the primaries were conducted.
Speaking after the exercise, Yishawu expressed gratitude to supporters for the overwhelming show of solidarity.
“This massive crowd can only be by God’s help. I am overwhelmed by their support,” he said.
One of the voters, Simon Omoweli, said the large turnout reflected the lawmaker’s performance and impact within the constituency over the years.
“It tells you what Hon. Yishawu has done in the past years. Most of the people here see this as a payback time for him,” he said.
According to him, the lawmaker’s projects and interventions could be felt across communities within the constituency.
“There is no community within this constituency where you will not see the footprint of Hon. Yishawu. People came out because they appreciate what he has done,” he added.
Another party leader and former councillor in the ward, Mike Phillips, described the crowd as “organic,” insisting that residents turned out voluntarily because of the lawmaker’s achievements.
“Most of these people are not politicians. Some left their workplaces to be here because he has touched lives positively,” Phillips said.
He added that residents were eager to support Yishawu’s return to the Assembly due to his empowerment programmes, healthcare initiatives and constituency projects.
“We have not witnessed such representation before in this constituency, and that is why people came out in large numbers to support him,” he stated.
Also speaking, the APC Returning Officer, Alhaji Hashimu Abdulhamid, commended party members for conducting themselves peacefully during the exercise.
“The election has been peaceful and orderly. We have visited different local governments, and the crowd here is impressive. We also went to Victoria Island where the turnout was equally massive, but everything remained calm and successful,” he said.
He noted that security personnel were deployed across the venues to ensure a hitch-free exercise.(upshot report)
